Nutrition is the foundation of your health. Without good healthy nutrition you can’t improve your qualify of life and enjoy boundless energy and feeling great. So many illnesses and ailments are linked to nutrition but western doctors aren’t trained in nutrition so they prescribe medications. A band-aid at best because it doesn’t address the root of the problem and doesn’t facilitate the healing process.
In my two previous blogs I discussed how to make eating healthier and meal planning easier. That is part of the puzzle, but in order to improve your quality of life, along with eating healthier there are a couple of things you’ll want to include.
1. Water
Our bodies are 80% water. To support good health you need to consume water on a daily basis. Many times when you think you’re hungry, you’re really thirsty. Try it and see… Secondly, there are many ailments that can be alleviated by adding alkaline water to your daily routine. Not just any water, alkaline water.
In my home I have a water ionizer that produces microclustered, alkaline water. This water fights free radicals (linked to cancer) and balances the acidity in my body from the environment, stress and what I eat. (Not all foods are created equal, some are alkaline forming, others are acidic.) Acidity is the breeding ground for disease. Alkaline water also “cleans you out” and helps restore colon health.
2. Exercise
No news flash here, but your body needs both cardio and resistance exercise to maintain good health. Your heart needs regular exercise and you want to incorporate resistance exercise to keep your muscles strong. Exercise at a minimum 3-5 times a week. Don’t forget to include body and energy movement by incorporating some yoga or Tai Chi into your regular routine. Both of these help to eliminate the stress, tension and emotion stored in your body.
3. Sleep
Insomnia is a big problem in America. There are many factors that contribute to insomnia from your diet, to your habits just prior to sleep. Eating late at night, working on the computer until right before bed, analyzing your day and what you didn’t do as you lay in bed, worrying, being stressed out and…drinking too much.
If you want to improve your health and quality of life along with eating healthier as we’ve discussed this week, getting 7-8 hours sleep a night is essential. If you have issues going to sleep or staying asleep they should improve once you eat healthier meals, eliminate the sugar from your diet and reduce your alcohol intake.
To clear your mind so you can rest easily, spend five minutes before getting into bed and practice deep breathing. Inhale slowly (count to 10) and exhale slowly (count to 10). Repeat this deep breathing for five to ten minutes to clear your head and relax. Adding 30 minutes of meditation to your daily routine will also help you sleep better. You can purchase a meditation CD to help you if this is new for you.
by adding these three things to your healthy meal planning you can make a quantum leap in your level of health. Don’t get caught up in thinking about how deprived you are—remember to keep your goals in front of you and focus on why you want to improve your health. One day you’ll turn around and wonder why you waited so long to make this shift!
