Tonight we are starting a new support group for eating disorders in Glendale, CA. The group is open to individuals looking for help to overcome their eating disorder and also open to parents, families and loved ones who long to understand more about them.
Unfortunately eating disorders come with a stigma that often makes people embarrassed. It’s hard enough for an individual to admit to themselves or their loved ones that they have an eating disorder and even worse to be judged by others. When parents learn about the eating disorder many times their assumption is that they have to take control. In many cases this is the worst thing to do.
Family involvement is critical to helping an individual overcome an eating disorder. The entire family unit needs to understand the issues and learn how to commnicate more effectively so as not to continue sending unhealthy messages to the family member who is working on recovery.
Recovery from an eating disorder can be extremely difficult, it’s important to understand what helps and what doesn’t. That’s the beauty of a support group.
