When is the last time you felt really courageous? Was it in the last week, last month, the last year? If you’re stuck in the comfort of status quo, it’s possible that you may just be zoned out on your day-to-day patterns. And don’t get me wrong, in day-to-day mode, you may have plenty of confidence—because you know how to do what you do. But when is the last time you moved past your nerves, your fears, your inadequacies and took a courageous step out of your comfort zone?
The thing is, the more frequently you do it, the easier it will become. Just like using a muscle. It’s an analogy I think of every time I lift weights. The repetition of the movement builds the muscle. And the more I focus on the muscle and think “grow,” the easier it becomes.

I ran out to do a quick errand this weekend and found myself in the midst of Christmas Shopping. It wasn’t what I had planned, but there I was at the mall and everything was so festive. I purchased gifts for my nephews at one store, along with another item. When I got home, the third item wasn’t in my bag. I called and spoke to the salesperson who helped me. They put me on hold and asked the cashier and she was sure the item was in my bag.
The bag was tightly packed, there was no way the third item fell out. After being on hold several minutes, they said the store manager would be in the next morning and they would call me. But, they didn’t. So around noon, figuring they either forgot or were “holiday busy,” I called again. The store manager apologized for not calling earlier. She said they have security cameras in the store and she would pull up my transaction and watch it. That’s a first, but I thought it was a great way to resolve it.
My mind started to wonder if I had dropped the item, but I knew the bag was too full for that to happen. The store manager called back about 15 minutes later and said, “You’re right, the cashier never got the third item into the bag. For some reason she made two stacks.” I felt a huge sense of relief, that now I wasn’t being pegged as someone who was either lying or attempting to get one over on them. I received several apologies and they agreed to order and mail out my other item as it has since disappeared.
At any point of the process I could have bailed out, but I didn’t have an item I paid for and am not in the habit of giving a store money for no reason! When you know you’re right, be courageous and take a stand.
