The first month of 2014 is nearly over. Did you set your goals for the year? Have you started working toward the goals you set so you can reach December 31st proud of what you’ve accomplished this year?
My new vision board is up. I always have withdrawals – letting go of last year’s vision board until I create the new one and then of course, the new one always rocks way better than last year and makes me giggle at my attachment to being comfortable with the old.
The biggest change I’m making this year is to simplify. Simplify, simplify, simplify, in all aspects of my work and life. I decided to drop programs and marketing to places and people that aren’t working and by doing so lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. And by doing this I’ve completely raised the bar on being able to focus on what my top priorities and goals for this year are. And the best part about that is that it’s rejuvenated me and by having more of a single focus I am able to do so much more toward reaching my goals and it’s already paying off. And I love to reach goals because it makes me feel so good, so empowered and confident.
But, one thing that always happens when you set a new goal is that almost immediately obstacles show up. It’s easy to say, well why is this happening? I just committed to my goal and achieving it and now this has happened, what the hell man?
Alas it’s just part of the process. Once the goal and focus are set, the obstacles, wrinkles and challenges we need to resolve or solve to reach our destination show up (some slide by in stealth mode), are pointed out and unmistakable. The worst thing to do at this stage is to give up. That shouldn’t even be part of the thought process. Now is the time to get creative and figure out how you’re going to get around it, over it, under it or solve the riddle. It’s a huge opportunity and guess what? It means you’re moving close to your goal.
So instead of getting frustrated and upset, think about walking along the path to your goals and strolling through a beautiful garden being careful not to step on the ground cover, gorgeous flowers and quickly sliding to the side when you see the snake slithering toward you. As you navigate the garden with confidence and finesse, so too will you be able to reach your goals by keeping everything in perspective.
What are your goals for 2014 and what have you done so far to start reaching them? Tell me what you have planned for this year.
